Kovalchuk Contract Rejected by the NHL

As you all have probably heard by now, the NHL has rejected Ilya Kovalchuk's ridiculous 17-year $102 Million contract on the grounds that it circumvents the salary cap.

Thank God! Finally the NHL does something right! Personally, I hate all these ridiculous 10+ year contract, I think the limit should be 5 or 6 years. But what bugs me about this contract is not so much the ridiculous term, but the fact that the Devils and Kovalchuk knew that he would not be playing the full term of the contract. If this contract was allowed, could you just imagine the insane terms teams would be signing players for (just imagine: Steven Stamkos signed for $250 million over 35 years!)

According to this Sportsnet article the Devils won't appeal the NHL's decision. Assuming that there's no grievance filed by the NHLPA (who has only 5 days to file one) Kovalchuk is a UFA once again. I highly doubt this will mean anything, I imagine he will just re-sign with the Devils for another multi-year but less ridiculous contract.

Until next time folks have a good one!

The Ilya Kovalchuk Contract: Why the NHL needs to do something about it

Hello again. Free Agency has gone to a standstill except for a little signing that you may or may not have heard about from yesterday. A player by the name of Ilya Kovalchuk has just signed a 17 year deal worth $102 million! According to TSN the contract breaks down as follows:

- Kovalchuk will earn $6 million each of the next two seasons
- $11.5 million for the following five seasons
- $10.5 million in the 2017-18 season
- $8.5 million for the 2018-19 season
- $6.5 million in 2019-20
- $3.5 million in 2020-21
- $750,000 the following season
- and $550,000 for the final five years

I hate to beat a dead horse here because I'm sure you've all heard the numbers before reading this but this deal will only be a $6.5 million cap hit for the Devils and when the contract expires, Kovalchuk will be 44!

Here's my issue with this deal. First of all, it's clear Kovalchuk will not play until he is 44, he will retire and still make more than you or I could ever hope for. Lamoriello knows this of course, however making the contract go on for 17 years only creates a $6.5 million cap hit for the Devils. There is nothing illegal about this in the current CBA (to my knowledge), however you can be damn sure that it will be come the next one.

The NHL needs to look into this issue and not allow teams to do this, teams should not be able to sign a star player for a ridiculous term to lower the hit on the cap. I've always had a problem with these ridiculously long deals from the beginning. The NHL should limit the number of years a player can sign on to a team for, say maybe 5 or 6 years. These long-term deals are making the NHL look like a joke.

What does this mean for the Devils? Well this deal can either be the start of a strong team for the Devils or make the team completely crumble. Kovalchuk does bring some offensive flair to a team that is known to be defensive. However, if Kovalchuk is a bust in New Jersey, not having his 1-2 minute shifts, you can't get rid of him. No one would want to take on THAT contract! (and I thought Jeff Finger's contract was impossible to get rid of).

That is my rant and insight for now, until next time folks and tanks for reading!

Dion Phaneuf is Captain!

Yesterday, Ron Wilson named Dion Phaneuf the 17th captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs (22nd in the history of the franchise). Since the news broke, I, personally, have been scowering various sports websites to see different inputs on the new captain. The responses have been on either ends of the fence.

Some people speculate that this move was done in perfect time just after the cup, but just before the draft (where the Leafs won't be drafting until the 3rd round) and therefore this is done as a distraction to forget about the Kessel trade. This is partially true, there has been very little, if any, talk about the Leafs lack of a pick in the first two rounds. The timing of the announcement is a good PR move in terms of "distracting" fans, however to say the whole Phaneuf captaincy is based on that distraction is about as doubtful as Vesa Toskala having a .900 save percentage.

Listening to 102.1 The Edge, Wade Belak was a guest, talking about the Phaneuf captaincy, he said he thinks it's either about justifying the trade to get Phaneuf, or Phaneuf is a kiss-ass. If any trade needs to be justified with a captaincy, make Kessel the captain (although I was for that trade, just not for giving away two first rounders), that is the more controversial trade. I don't think many people had an issue with trading floaters like Stajan and Mayers away (too bad Whitey and Hagman had to go though). About Phaneuf being a kiss-ass: if it makes the team better, then who cares? Ever since the Phaneuf trade the Leafs have had more of a jump in their strides.

Another criticism is the short time Phaneuf has been with the Leafs. Phaneuf has only played 26 games with the Leafs having 2 goals and 8 assists in that span. It doesn't matter how few games you have played with a club, if you're a leader, then you deserve the 'C'.

The bottom line is: there is no one else on this team right now that I would consider a leader. Players like Beauchemin and Komisarek can help guide Phaneuf along the way. I feel Phaneuf will make a great captain and will be with the Leafs for many years to come. The pieces are beginning to fall into place in Burke's plan, now we just have to wait and see how well these pieces will fit together.

Top 10 Leafs Moments of the 2009-2010 Season

Alright, I know it's been a while since my last post. But I have been really busy and apologize. I also know it's been 9 days since the Leafs season ended, however it takes that long to figure out the top 10 Leafs moments in what has been an awful season. However I did manage to scrounge around and find 10 moments I felt were worthy of mention.

10.) The Complete Renovation of the Maple Leafs Roster:

This one is really quite straightforward. There is only one Leaf left from the Ferguson era and that is Tomas Kaberle, and odds are he will be gone as well. Burkie got rid of Stajan, Blake, Hagman (too bad though, I liked him), Stajan, Toskala, Mayers (more on these guys heading out later), Stempniak, and Ponikarovsky. I know we finished in 29th, but for the first time ever, the Leafs are doing a major rebuild, implosion, whatever you want to call it, of their roster.

9.) Christian Hanson's Career Night:

For the whole time Hanson was with the Leafs this season, I said he was not ready for the NHL yet and that he needs more time with the Marlies. However, against the Habs he was unstoppable for some reason. Do I think he's ready for the NHL now? No. Just a really good night. Hanson has great speed, but no finish, if he can consistently find the finish, he'll be ready for the NHL.

8.) Colton Orr's "3":

This "controversial" move by Colton Orr made me happy. I don't care what Don Cherry says, that was awesome. Colton Orr holding 3 fingers up to show how many fights he won against Matt Carkner. Why is this so awesome? Finally the Leafs have a guy that will get under the skin of the other team without being a douche like Sean Avery. Since Tie Domie left, the Leafs have had virtually no one (Belak was a good fighter but he was no Domi, Tucker was getting too old). Orr has filled the void of toughness and I love his number.

7.) Luke Schenn's Two Goal Night Against the Sens:

Luke Schenn is one of my favourite players. So when he scored two goals in the same game I was quite excited. Most people probably wouldn't include this in their top 10, but I am. Other than my biased opinion on Schenn, this game showed Schenn regain his confidence, and maybe a little flash of what's in store for us in future years.

6.) Gustavsson's MONSTER Save against the Ducks:

I remember literally jumping up off the couch when this save was made. And I proceeded to force my roommates to watch the replay of it and they were impressed...or feigned it to shut me up. But seriously, I love it when Joe Bowen goes nuts. Unfortunatly, we didn't see much of this Gustavsson until after the Leafs got Giguere (I guess Toskala is not a good teacher, who knew?) The Leafs recently extended his contract for 2 more years, hopefully we see more of that.

5.) Gustavsson's MONSTER Saves versus the Stars:

Apparently the Monster kicks ass against Western Conference teams...if only he was on the Leafs way back when the Leafs were actually in the Western conference! Seriously though, in the first half of the season we merely got flashes of brilliance of the Monster, but like I said before, after the Leafs got Giguere he has really come out and shown us what he can truly do.

4.) Giguere's Back-to-Back Shutouts:

I only have the one video because the 2nd shutout was the game versus the Sens which I have above in Schenn's 2-goal game. Let me tell you Burke looked like a genius after this trade. Of course, Giguere didn't play quite as well after the shutouts, but still better than Toskala and a great mentor for Jonas Gustavsson.

3.) The Wild Overtime Versus the Lightning:

This had to have been the most exciting overtime period I have ever seen. A great pass by Bozak and a great shot by a clearly exhausted Kessel lead to the goal in what had to have been the slowest 2-on-1 break in NHL history. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. And once again, Joe Bowen goes nuts!

2.) Tyler Bozak's First Career NHL Goal:

Wow...just...wow what a goal! He looked like a superstar with that goal, just...unbelievable. Since preseason I have liked Tyler Bozak, and when I saw that goal...well..it was another "jump out of your seat" type of play. Unbelievable.

An finally....1.) The Blockbuster Deals:

and...

I actually slept through this trade. I was notified when my sister repeatedly called me...I proceeded to jump up and down and shout "we got Dion Phaneuf!? Dion F***ing Phaneuf!?" Burke was able to unload a giant contract and a terrible goalie for a good goalie, as well as get rid of a bunch of (what I call) "floaters" for a great defenseman, and the next captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Well that is the countdown. I probably missed something, but I also repressed most of the memories from this past season, so please don't think I'm an idiot. Thank you for reading.

The Post-Trade Report

Well it's been over 24 hours since the trade deadline and after tonight's game, one thing is certain: the Leafs have NO offense. Phil Kessel has 21 goals leading the Leafs in goals...2nd most: Kulemin with 11! 11!(I wish you could capitalize numbers so I could emphasize that). I can only assume Burke has some magic up his sleeve during free agency. Or perhaps he's waiting until draft day to deal Kaberle for someone...or a draft pick which we so desperately need.

On tonight's game: the Leafs looked way better than they did against Carolina on Wednesday night. The Leafs got some scoring from their young'uns: Bozak and Stalberg. Caputi also got his first point as a Leaf.

Caputi looks good. I am excited to see him in a couple of years time, he will be a decent 2nd liner I predict.

To end: Burke, we need more offense, I expect an Ilya Kovalchuk contract by July 2nd. Until then, have a good on Leafs Nation!

Trade Deadline!

3:38pm- Leafs acquire a young defenseman from Pittsburgh for a sixth round pick.

3:16pm- Joey MacDonald goes to Anaheim for a 7th round pick. Definately a step up from Vesa Toskala for the Ducks.

3:11pm- 4th and 7th round picks coming to TO for Stempniak.

3:07pm- Stempniak to Phoenix/Hamilton for Draft picks being reported...my prediction is a third and fourth rounder.

3:03pm- Deadline! However, trades are still coming through, will keep posted on the Stempniak trade...and anything else involving the Leafs.

2:57pm- According to Downgoesbrown Stempniak deal is done...no word where or what for.

2:43pm- According to Darren Dreger "Stempniak is going to go."

2:38pm- Darren Dreger is reporting that the Leafs are not done yet.

2:15pm- Burke says something coming within 45 minutes...I sure as hell hope so.

2:10pm- Kypreos reporting that Toskala is on his move once again, this time to Calgary...I guess he won't be able to wash the black and gold out of his equipment.

1:51pm- We're approaching the final stretch, I have a feeling Kabs is going.

1:31pm- AM 640's Jonas Siegel states that Kaberle acknowledged the he will waive his NTC if the right deal comes along.

1:14pm- All's quiet on the Leafs' front still...

12:19pm- Listening to Pony on the Leafs TV live feed online. Classy guy, we'll miss you too Pony, good luck in Pittsburgh!

12:14pm- Reported that Burke has said "with the players we are looking at moving things wont start heating up until 1:30 or 2 pm," let's see what players he's talking about.

11:48- Justin Pogge goes to Carolina for Aaron Ward....interesting trade...apparently Carolina hasn't seen any Leafs games with Pogge from last year.

11:18 am- Leafs get a 5th rounder in 2010 for Skoula...nothing fantastic.

11:00 AM- Martin Skoula to the Devils, no word on who the Leafs are getting back, will update when word is heard.

Well, we're back from the Olympics and the Leafs are back to their losing ways. However, Burke trades Ponikarovsky to Pittsburgh for Luca Caputi and Martin Skoula. Yet another one off my list of potential people to be tarded.

Caputi is a rookie who only has 9 NHL games under his belt, 3 points in those 9 games. The one thing I know about this kid...he has a sick name! But besides that, Burkie is continuing the trend of going younger: Ponikarovsky is 29 years old, Caputi, just 21.

Based on speculations that I have heard, the Leafs might be trading Skoula. The Leafs got Skoula so that the Pens could work out their cap issues. Skoula has 193 points in 757 NHL games. This year with the Pittsburgh Penguins skoula has 8 points (3G, 5A) in 33 games.

If the Leafs decide to keep Skoula, it could mean a guy like Exelby or Finger is heading out: Exelby being in the last year of a contract and Finger being a burden on the cap.

Rumors are also swirling that Burke is aware of teams Kaberle would waive his NTC for, however no official list has been given. The ball STILL is in Kabby's court.

Players I suspect will be traded: Stempniak, Finger, Exelby, Grabovsky and maybe even Primeau. I will try to update today as much as possible as more news breaks.

4 games after the big trade: How are they doing?

After the big trade which sent Blake, Toskala, Hagman, Stajan, White, and Mayers over to the Western Conference and Giguere, Phaneuf, Sjostrom, and Aullie to the good guys, the Leafs are 2-2-0 with a 1.75 GAA. Phaneuf has made the defense look like...a defense! Sjostrom has provided a great jump to the penalty kill making the Leafs 10 for 11 on the PK since the trade.

Giguere has been fantastic, 2-1-0 with the Leafs with 2 shutouts in those 2 victories. Giguere became the first goaltender and Leafs history, and first in the NHL since Hackett in 2003 to get back-to-back shutouts in his first two games.

This trade is a true display of Burke's genius. Now, I am not planning the parade, this team is far from being a legitimate Stanley Cup contender but this trade is finally a step in the right direction. What the Leafs need is a player to play with Kessel.

I'm going to cut this one short, there's one game left before the Olympics break in St. Louis, the Leafs will play former Leafs Steen and Colaiacovo. On a side note: apparently the Blues are saying the Colaiacovo is on the trading block.

Before I go, I want to give my condolences to the Burke family after the tragic loss of Brendan Burke. RIP Brendan and my thoughts and prayers go out to Brian and his family.

Who's left to trade?

The Leafs played an amazing game tonight, whitewashing the Devils 3-0. Giguere is only the second goalie in Leafs history to record a shutout in his debut (the first being Eddie Belfour in 2002). And the three stars for tonights game? Sjostrom, Phaneuf, and Giguere: Burke is going to be sleeping well tonight, that's for sure!

In an earlier post I talked about potential players to trade. Well, I listed 5 of them...3 of them have been traded, I feel good about myself for that one.

Tomas Kaberle (as I mentioned earlier)- Obvious, it's been talked about for years, but he won't waive his No-Trade Clause and Burke won't ask him to. However, since making that statement, Kaberle's ice time has decreased: coincidence? He is probably the Leafs biggest asset, he can be the difference between being eliminated in the 2nd round of the playoffs, and making it to the finals. I would hate to see him go, but the Leafs can get something decent for him, potentially a first-round pick. Perhaps the accquisition of Phaneuf is going to be a factor in getting Tomas to waive his NTC. On Sportsnet, it was said that Tomas Kaberle jerseys are being sold for half-price.

Alexei Ponikarovsky- (As I mentioned earlier)The "Big Pony" has been fairly decent this season. He can be an affective goal scorer as long as he is surrounded by the right line mates. Perhaps he'd look good in Nashville. When Brian Burke stated he was going to try making another trade before the Olympic roster freeze, speculation immediately started that Ponikarovsky was next. Who knows? maybe he is, Burke blew up this team once, let's see if he'll do it again.

Mikhail Grabovski- Well, now we see why Montreal was so eager to get rid of him. However, he does have SOME good qualities...such as...he's fast, that's about it. If you're looking for a passer, or someone who keeps their head up...steer clear of Grabbo. However, he is fast, and he can score sometimes...he'd make a decent third liner on a real team.

Joey MacDonald- Assuming all goes well with Giguere and the Leafs decide to keep him. Joey MacDonald would be a decent goalie for a team looking for a backup (like Anaheim when they see Toskala actually play). He held is own pretty well on a league-worst New York Islanders. I'm not sure Burke's plans with MacDonald for the future, but if it's just to stay in the Marlies, you might as well trade him.

Jeff Finger- Okay now hear me out, I know no one would take on his contract unless the team has JFJ as their GM however, Finger does have some qualities that may make him appealing. He's a big hitter and is known for his open ice hits. He can score from the point on the powerplay. I expect Burke to try dealing him because you can't have an overpaid defenceman sitting on the sidelines.

That's all for now. Enjoy your new-look Leafs Leafs Nation. See you next time!

Blockbuster Deal for the Leafs!!!

After a disappointing Saturday night loss to the Vancouver Canucks, somethign had to be done. Well something was done: Jamal Mayers, Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, and Ian White go to Calgary for Fredrik Sjostrom, Keith Aullie, and Dion Phaneuf!

Sjostrom brings to the Leafs some quality penalty killing, which, let's face it, the Leafs DON'T have. He has 94 points in 404 games.

Keith Aullie is a prospect of the Flames, so again this is Brian Burke giving the Leafs some young talent. Aullie will play a stint with the Marlies and who knows, maybe he will be called up by the Leafs.

The big name: Dion Phaneuf! A lot of people speculate that this trade will be remembered for Dion Phaneuf going one way and Ian White going the other. Phaneuf will give the Leafs some much needed point drives from the back end. Not only that, but lately, because Kessel's the only superstar on this Leafs squad, everyone is going after Kessel; you cover Phil, the team's screwed. Now they have two players to worry about. That's definately a start.

The Leafs now have 3 top 10 draft picks in their lineup: Kessel, Phaneuf, and Schenn. However, Burkie did not stop there, Burke then proceeded to trade Vesa Toskala, and Jason Blake to Anaheim for J.S. Giguere!

The fact that a team not only took Toskala off of our hands, but took on Blake's contract is astounding, the fact we got a Stanley Cup winning goaltender is a bonus!

J.S. Giguere has been struggling in Anaheim, however, Burke and Wilson believe that reuniting Giguere and goaltending coach Francois Allaire will bring Giguere's game back to where it was when the Ducks won the cup.

It's obvious that the Leafs won't make the playoffs this year, but this team is beginning to look like a Burke team. Next year the Leafs definately have potential, if they can sign then-free agent Ilya Kovalchuk, they will be a legitimate playoff-bound club.

My next post will be an updated "to trade" list, as some of my suggestions were taken by Burkie (I assume he read this blog and thought I was right). Until then, sleep well Leafs nation, sleep well.

Buyers or Sellers? Probably Sellers

I know the trade deadline is not until March, but with the Olympic schedule freeze, there are really not that many games between now and the trade deadline. So who can the Leafs trade? When you think Toronto Maple Leafs, you don't think "talent" you think "disappointment"...at least I do...while I cry myself to sleep. Anyways, despite this, there is some players on the Leafs that can provide perhaps a draft pick, which the Leafs so desperately need. As far as I see, there are 2 untouchables on this team: Luke Schenn and Phil Kessel (I guess 3 untouchables if you want to include Nazem Kadri).

Tomas Kaberle- Obvious, it's been talked about for years, but he won't waive his No-Trade Clause and Burke won't ask him to.

Vesa Toskala- Who'd take Toskala after his performance this season? Well...let's look at the Calgary Flames, they have no faith in their back-up goaltender (as evident in last night's 9-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks). However, the Flames do not have enough cap room, they made need to include a player to fit him under the cap, I don't know if that will happen, but you never know.

Ian White- He does it all: defense, forward, and goalie! He has been an outstanding (cheap) defenseman for the Leafs. If the Leafs can't sign him by the trade deadline, trade him, you can't lose him for nothing. A team needing more help on the blue line would really appreciate what White can offer.

Niklas Hagman- He has just broke his goalless drought. He is a streaky goal scorer, however he is leading the Leafs in goals right now. He has 18 of them. He is very creative with the puck and would be a decent 2nd line player. He could help out a team in need of secondary scoring.

Alexei Ponikarovsky- The "Big Pony" has been fairly decent this season. He can be an affective goal scorer as long as he is surrounded by the right line mates. Perhaps he'd look good in Nashville.

For now, this is what the Leafs have to deal with. We will see if Burke can work some trade deadline magic. Until next time Leafs Nation, good night and take care!

The Midseason "Awards"

At this point in the season, the Leafs are an abysmal 15-23-9 coming off a horrible 4-2 loss against Carolina. However, in this blog, I want to take a look at the Leafs who have been surprising, disappointing, and what not.

Let's start off with the nasties: Disappointing!:

First off, Mike Komisarek. The former Habs defenseman was signed by the Leafs to a five-year $22.5 million contract. I am well aware that he was not signed to be an offensive defenseman, however, it's his terrible timing in getting penalties, and his consistency in giving away the puck. It's no wonder Montreal was so eager to get rid of him. He currently gets booed by Montreal fans...if he continues this way, Leaf fans will be joining them.

Vesa Toskala- Let's face it, this guy is not getting re-signed by another NHL team after his contract expires. He is horribly inconsistent. Sure he has hot streaks where he looks like he's unstoppable, but then his confidence shatters and he'll let in goals like this:

and his confidence shatters like a high school kid getting rejected by his crush. I'm sorry Vesa but you are not worth the draft picks we traded to get you. Maybe he looked like a good goalie a few years ago...but comparing him to Raycroft, of course Vesa looks good.

Jason Blake- Anyone who thought Blake would repeat his 40-goal performance from the Island when he came to Toronto is off their rocker. I will admit, he does work hard, out of all the guys on the ice, he fights to at least TRY to score. However, if the Leafs are looking to make the playoffs, you cannot depend on a guy like Blake. Blake was at his best when he played Dominic Moore, and vice versa. I know Moore maybe wanted too much on his contract, but I still think it was a mistake to trade him.

Surprising:

Ian White- He does it all: he plays defense, he plays offense, and he plays goalie! Watch out Vesa, White may have your job soon!

His contract expires this season. Hand the guy $2 million and keep him on the team! This guy is worth it!

Tomas Kaberle- This guy has been on the Leafs for years. He is currently 10th in all-time points for the Leafs and 2nd in Defensemen, only behind Borje Salming. I personally Kaberle should be captain. He's a great leader, and definitely can set an example for the young'uns...the Leafs need a leader...badly! Interesting about Kaberle, he has the most points of anyone in the NHL with less than 100 goals. Also, Kaberle only has 73 career goals...7 of those are overtime winners! Not bad for a guy drafted in the 8th round (204th overall).

Jonas Gustavsson- Now, I know he is no Marty Brodeur, or Roberto Luongo, but for a guy coming in from Sweden and having to learn how to play on North American ice surfaces, he has not done bad. He still has trouble handling the pucks but he is learning. At 25 years old, if the Leafs don't trade him away for a bag of pucks like they tend to do with decent players, Gustavsson could be a great starting goalie for Toronto for many years to come.

Well that it is for now. I know some of you are thinking what about Kessel? He's been a disappointment....well I say "no!" Remember, he did not have a training camp, and I mean, everyone goes through slumps, Kessel will be back up and scoring in no time. Patience is the key with some of these young Leafs! So until next time...keep your head up high fellow Leafers!

New Year, New Beginnings?

So far in this calendar year, the Leafs are 1-1-0. For the second time this season the Leafs beat Florida after erasing a 2 goal deficit. And once again, Jonas Gustavsson was outstanding! After allowing 2 quick McCabe (grrrrr) goals: Stempniak, Kaberle, and Ponikarovsky score 3 straight to give the Leafs the win!

Kulemin has stood out for me the last month or so. He has shown great defensive skill as well as great offensive skill, definitely one of the better 2-way players the Leafs have. Kulemin seems to be playing comfortably in the NHL now.

Francois Beauchemin saved the game for the Leafs. After a really DUMB play in the offensive zone, the Panthers had a 3 on 1 against Ian White. Beauchemin rushed back into the play just on time to deflect the shot away from the net on a shot that would've gone in for sure.

Overall, the Leafs played a lot better tonight than they have over the last couple of games.

I'm going to cut this one short because the World Junior Finals are on, and it is unbelievably exciting!!! GO CANADA GO!!!
